Common Modeling Mistakes

Last updated October 13, 2026

Omitting upstream supply Process for inputs.#

Lone Material inputs without supplying Processes are incomplete endpoints; they do not contribute to impact results.

Using Disaggregated instead of Aggregated Processes for upstream supply inputs.#

Disaggregated Processes only reflect the scope of the named activity itself; the impacts from upstream contributing activities are not included.

Aggregated Processes include all upstream activities by default, as defined by the publisher.

Incorrect ratio of Process inputs to outputs (called “batch size”).#

The relative quantities of inputs and outputs are defined in the Batch section of the exchanging Process.

Changing the scale of an entire input or output Process itself does not influence their relative scales because all nodes are normalized when a System Boundary is created according to the Batch section details.

Including co-products in the system boundary.#

In order to exclude the burdens allocated to co-products, those co-products must be excluded from the System Boundary. See here on how to remove co-products.
